Zanzibar, Tanzania

Stone Town's spice markets and a beach lined with traditional dhow sailboats make Zanzibar the beach half of an East Africa trip.

June to October, or December to February

There's no nonstop flight from the US to Zanzibar; every itinerary connects through a Gulf or European hub — Doha, Dubai, and Amsterdam are the most common — for a total journey of around 18 to 20 hours. Because of that distance, we almost always book Zanzibar as an extension onto a mainland East Africa safari rather than a standalone trip.

Stone Town, the island's UNESCO-listed old quarter, is a maze of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, and spice markets that make for an easy walking day; several operators run half-day spice-farm tours just outside town. The island's northern and eastern beaches, around Nungwi and Paje, are lined with traditional wooden dhow sailboats still used for local fishing and easy sunset charters.

June through October and December through February are Zanzibar's two dry-season windows; April and May bring the heaviest rains of the year and are worth avoiding, particularly if a beach-focused stay is the priority.

Stone Town, Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed old quarter, mixes Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian architectural influences from centuries as a trading port, and its spice markets reflect the island's history as a major clove exporter. Most visitors pair a few days in Stone Town with beach time on the island's north or east coast, and Zanzibar combines naturally with a mainland Tanzania safari given the short connecting flight between the two.

Four to five nights, most often added onto the end of a mainland Tanzania safari rather than booked alone. It suits travelers wanting a beach-recovery stretch after days of early safari wake-ups, and the short connecting flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam makes the combination logistically easy.

Getting there: About 18-20h, with one connection through Europe or the Gulf. We check routing and fare-class options across that itinerary and weigh them against June to October, or December to February, rather than booking on price alone.

Zanzibar's Stone Town was, for centuries, the center of the East African spice and, more grimly, slave trade — the Old Slave Market site is now a memorial and museum, and the carved wooden doors found throughout Stone Town, many studded with brass spikes originally meant to deter elephants in India, reflect the island's deep trading ties across the Indian Ocean to Oman, Persia and India rather than mainland Africa alone. The island was ruled as an Omani sultanate for much of the 19th century, and that Arab, Persian, Indian and African layering produced Swahili culture and language, still the island's cultural backbone today. Zanzibar's nickname, the Spice Island, is earned: cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper have been grown commercially here since the early 1800s, and spice-farm tours remain one of the most genuinely educational half-days available anywhere in East Africa. Zanzibari cuisine reflects that trading history directly — Zanzibar pizza (a stuffed, fried street-food dish, not actually pizza in the Italian sense) and biryani both trace to Indian and Arab influence layered onto East African base ingredients. The island is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, and his childhood home in Stone Town, though not a formal museum, draws steady pilgrimage from Queen fans regardless.
