e-OCI, e-Arrival Card and Your Passport: India Entry Paperwork for US Passport Holders (2026)

What changed for US passport holders flying to India in 2026: the digital e-OCI card, the mandatory e-Arrival Card filed within 72 hours of landing, passport renewal rules for OCI holders, and the new US biometric exit checks.

Key Takeaways

  • India's Ministry of Home Affairs launched the fully digital e-OCI card on June 30, 2026. New applicants no longer receive a printed booklet from July 8, 2026; existing booklets remain valid (EY tax alert, July 7, 2026; NRI Affairs).
  • Every foreign national, OCI cardholders included, must file India's online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing and show its QR code at immigration. The paper disembarkation form was withdrawn on April 1, 2026 (Consulate General of India, San Francisco; Envoy Global, May 7, 2026).
  • OCI holders who renew a US passport now update the passport details online within three months instead of applying for a re-issued card at ages 20 and 50.
  • US passport holders without OCI still need a visa; the e-Visa is applied for online before travel and the passport must be valid for six months beyond arrival.
  • On the way home, US Customs and Border Protection now collects facial biometrics from most non-citizens at exit as well as entry, under a rule in force since December 26, 2025.

The documents that get a family from a US airport to an Indian arrivals hall changed more in 2026 than in the previous decade. The OCI card, the lifetime visa most Indian-Americans travel on, became a QR code on a phone. The paper card you used to fill in on the plane became a form you file before you leave home. And on the US side, facial recognition replaced the stamp for most non-citizens leaving the country.

None of it is hard. All of it is easy to miss when you are packing for two months in India. Here is what each change means, what you need to do before you fly, and what still has not changed.

What is the e-OCI card, and do I still need my blue booklet?

The e-OCI card is the digital version of the Overseas Citizen of India card, issued under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, which came into force on May 1, 2026. The Ministry of Home Affairs launched it on June 30, 2026, and from July 8, 2026 new applicants receive only the digital credential, downloadable from the OCI portal at ociservices.gov.in and through the government's "Indian Visa Su-Swagatam" mobile app (EY, July 7, 2026; High Commission of India, Lilongwe).

If you already hold a printed OCI booklet, nothing is taken away. The booklet remains valid for travel and for immigration clearance, and you are not required to surrender it. What you gain is the option to carry the digital card instead: the government has said an e-OCI holder "will need not carry the physical copy of the OCI card at the time of Immigration Clearance", and that "the physical booklets shall continue to remain valid" (High Commission of India, Lilongwe, July 20, 2026). Our advice for this winter is to carry both. Airline check-in staff in the USA are still learning the new credential, and a printed booklet settles the question at the counter in seconds.

What do existing OCI cardholders need to do?

  1. Download your e-OCI. Log in at ociservices.gov.in or in the Su-Swagatam app, and save the card to your phone. Most existing holders can do this without a fresh application or an in-person visit (Fragomen).
  2. Update your passport details within three months of renewing a US passport. The old requirement to apply for a re-issued OCI card after a new passport at age 20 or 50 is gone; a portal update replaces it, with a three-month deadline (NRI Affairs, July 8, 2026).
  3. Keep the passport that the OCI was issued against until the update is done. Immigration matches the OCI to a passport number. If you travel on a new passport before updating, carry the old one too.
  4. Enrol for e-gates if you fly often. Biometric enrolment at fresh registration is what unlocks the facial-recognition e-gates the ministry has promised at 13 Indian airports by December 2026 (NRI Affairs).

If you still hold an old PIO card, convert it to OCI before you fly. PIO cards have been phased out and are not accepted as a travel document on their own.

What is the e-Arrival Card, and who must file it?

The e-Arrival Card is the online replacement for the paper disembarkation card. Every foreign national arriving in India, including OCI cardholders and children travelling on a foreign passport, must complete it before landing. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco's advisory sets the start date at October 1, 2025, and after a six-month transition the paper form was withdrawn on April 1, 2026, so the online card is now the only way to make the declaration (CGI San Francisco; Envoy Global).

How it works:

  • File it within 72 hours before arrival, online through the Bureau of Immigration's e-Arrival portal or in the Su-Swagatam app. One form per traveller, so a family of four files four.
  • You need the passport, the flight number, the address in India and the purpose of visit. The form takes about five minutes.
  • You receive a QR code. Show it at immigration with your passport and OCI or visa.
  • Save a screenshot or a PDF of the completed form. If the officer cannot find your record, the copy settles it.

On a Friday night flight from Newark that lands on Sunday morning, the earliest you can file is Thursday morning. Set a reminder; this is the step families forget.

Which visa do US passport holders without OCI need?

A US passport holder who is not an OCI cardholder needs a visa for India. For tourism and family visits that is almost always the e-Visa, applied for online before travel on the government's visa portal, with 30-day, one-year and five-year validities. Two rules trip people up every winter:

  • The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of arrival and have two blank pages.
  • The e-Visa is for arrival at designated airports and seaports, which includes every airport our customers fly into, but not every land border.

The e-Visa does not remove the e-Arrival Card requirement; you need both. A US-born child with Indian grandparents is a US passport holder and needs an e-Visa or an OCI of their own.

What has changed on the US side when you fly back?

A Department of Homeland Security rule in force since December 26, 2025 lets Customs and Border Protection collect facial biometrics from most non-citizens both on entry and on exit, ending the earlier limits on exit collection (Berardi Immigration Law). In practice, green card holders and visa holders are photographed at the gate when boarding an international flight, and at kiosks on return. US citizens can decline the photo and ask for manual processing. The gate photo adds no time; the kiosk on return can, so give yourself the usual connection margin at JFK, Newark, Chicago or San Francisco.

A pre-departure checklist for an India trip

  • Passport valid six months past your arrival date, with blank pages
  • OCI booklet in the bag and e-OCI downloaded to the phone; passport details updated if you renewed
  • e-Visa approved and printed if you are not an OCI holder
  • e-Arrival Card filed within 72 hours of landing, QR code saved, one per traveller
  • Printed copies of the e-ticket and the Indian address for the arrival form
  • For a US green card holder, the card itself, not a photocopy, for the return

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to carry my physical OCI card in 2026?

Not under the rules: the digital e-OCI is accepted at Indian immigration. We still recommend carrying the booklet this winter because airline staff in the USA may ask for it at check-in.

Do OCI cardholders have to fill in the e-Arrival Card?

Yes. The consulate advisory names OCI cardholders explicitly, and the paper alternative ended on April 1, 2026. File it within 72 hours before landing.

I renewed my US passport. Does my OCI card need to be reissued?

No. Update the new passport details on the OCI portal within three months. The re-issue at ages 20 and 50 was dropped under the 2026 rules.

Can my US-born child travel to India on my OCI card?

No. Every traveller needs their own document: an OCI card in the child's name, or an e-Visa on the child's US passport.

What happens if I forget the e-Arrival Card?

You can file it at the airport before you reach the counter, but the queue is the price. File it the day before you fly.
