Key Takeaways

  • The Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh Mela begins on October 31, 2026 with flag-hoisting at Trimbakeshwar and at Ramkund in Nashik, and closes on July 24, 2028 (Wikipedia, Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha).
  • The three main bathing days, the Amrit Snan, are August 2, August 31 and September 11, 2027 at Nashik, with the third bath at Trimbakeshwar on September 12, 2027.
  • The 2015 Simhastha drew an estimated 30 million devotees. Hotels and trains for the 2027 bathing weeks will sell out months ahead; flights from the USA will not, but fares rise as the dates near.
  • Mumbai (BOM) is the gateway: about 170 km and four hours by road from Nashik. Nashik's own airport at Ozar has a handful of domestic flights, and Pune is the alternative.
  • August and September are the monsoon in Maharashtra. Build in a spare day on each side of a bathing date and book changeable fares.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela comes to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar once every twelve years, when Jupiter enters Leo. The next one opens in a week, on October 31, 2026, and although the great bathing days are not until August and September 2027, families in the USA are already asking the two questions that matter: when exactly, and how do we get there.

This guide answers both, with the official dates, the realistic routing from US cities, and the booking windows we recommend after planning pilgrimage trips for Indian-American families for nine years.

When is the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027?

The mela runs for 21 months, but pilgrims plan around a handful of days. These are the dates on the calendar of the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha, as recorded by Wikipedia from the mela authorities; confirm them against the Maharashtra government's Simhastha announcements as 2027 approaches.

Event Date Where
Flag-hoisting (dhwajarohan), the formal opening October 31, 2026 Trimbakeshwar and Ramkund, Nashik
First Amrit Snan August 2, 2027 Nashik and Trimbakeshwar
Second Amrit Snan August 31, 2027 Nashik and Trimbakeshwar
Third Amrit Snan September 11, 2027 (Nashik), September 12, 2027 (Trimbakeshwar)
Flag-lowering, the close July 24, 2028

The weeks around the Amrit Snan days are when the akharas process to the river and the crowds peak. A quieter darshan at Ramkund and Trimbakeshwar is possible on any day of the 21 months, and many families prefer the opening fortnight in November 2026 or the cooler months of January and February 2027 to the monsoon bathing days.

Why Nashik and Trimbakeshwar?

The Simhastha is the Kumbh Mela held on the Godavari rather than the Ganga. Nashik's Ramkund, where the river bends through the old city, is the bathing ghat; Trimbakeshwar, about 28 km west in the hills where the Godavari rises, is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and holds its own Amrit Snan at the Kushavarta kund. Pilgrims usually do both: Ramkund on the bathing morning, Trimbakeshwar the same day or the next.

How do you get to Nashik from the USA?

Fly to Mumbai. Nashik has no international airport, and its domestic airport at Ozar sees only a few flights a day. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport is about 170 km away, three and a half to four hours by road on the Mumbai–Nashik highway, and it is where most US arrivals land. From the US East Coast, Air India flies Newark–Mumbai daily and JFK–Mumbai, nonstop on the way to India and with a technical stop in Rome on the way back this winter (see what is actually flying this winter). From everywhere else, a one-stop through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Frankfurt or London lands in Mumbai in 18 to 21 hours.

Then road or rail. A pre-booked car from the airport is the simplest for a family with elders and luggage. Trains run from Mumbai's Kalyan and CSMT stations to Nashik Road in about three hours, and the Maharashtra authorities ran special trains and thousands of extra buses in 2015; expect the same in 2027.

Pune is the alternative gateway. Pune's airport is about 210 km from Nashik, useful if Mumbai fares are high or you are combining the mela with family in Pune. Delhi works too, with a domestic flight to Nashik or Mumbai, but it adds a leg.

When should you book flights for the 2027 bathing dates?

August and September are among the cheaper months of the year on the USA to India corridor, because US school holidays end and Diwali demand has not begun. For reference, in our October 2026 fare report the lowest round-trip economy fare from New York to Mumbai was $788 and the typical lowest fare across all 240 USA to India city pairs was $1,402. Mumbai fares for August 2027 will open at similar levels once airlines load the schedule, roughly eleven months ahead.

Our recommendation:

  1. Decide your bathing date first. The three Amrit Snan dates are fixed; everything else flexes around them.
  2. Book flights four to six months out, by March or April 2027, on a changeable fare. The dates will not move, but monsoon flight delays and family plans do.
  3. Book the Nashik hotel now, or at least by January. Rooms near Panchavati and in Trimbak are the scarce resource, not seats on aircraft.
  4. Travel as a group if you can. A family of six or more booked together gets one itinerary, one vehicle and one point of contact for changes; see our pilgrimage travel guide for how group booking works.
  5. Arrive two days before the bath. Monsoon rain closes roads and delays flights into Mumbai every August. The Godavari itself flooded Ramkund in July 2026.

Practical notes for a monsoon Kumbh

  • Weather. Expect rain most days in August and the first half of September, warm temperatures, and slippery ghats. Pack waterproofs, closed shoes with grip, and a dry bag for phones and documents.
  • Crowds. Authorities expect the 2027 bathing days to exceed the 30 million who came in 2015. Plan to walk the last few kilometres on bathing mornings; vehicles will be stopped well outside the ghats.
  • Elders. The walk, the rain and the crowd are a lot for grandparents. A quieter day, or the opening fortnight in November 2026, gives them the darshan without the crush.
  • Paperwork. OCI cardholders and US passport holders need the e-Arrival Card filed within 72 hours before landing in India; our India entry paperwork guide for 2026 explains it.
  • Health. Carry your own water, a basic medicine kit and travel insurance that covers trip delays, which the monsoon makes likely.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027 start?

The Simhastha formally opens on October 31, 2026 with flag-hoisting at Trimbakeshwar and Ramkund. The main bathing days are August 2, August 31 and September 11, 2027, and the mela closes on July 24, 2028.

Which airport is closest to Nashik for the Kumbh Mela?

Nashik's own airport at Ozar has limited domestic flights. Most international pilgrims fly into Mumbai, about four hours away by road, or Pune.

Are there nonstop flights from the USA to Mumbai?

Yes, from Newark and New York JFK on Air India, nonstop to Mumbai and with a technical stop in Rome on the return this winter. From other US cities, a single connection through a Gulf or European hub is standard.

How far ahead should I book flights for the Kumbh Mela?

Four to six months for flights, on a changeable fare; as early as possible for hotels in Nashik and Trimbak, which are the scarce resource.

Can we do the Kumbh Mela as a family group from the USA?

Yes. Group bookings keep one itinerary and one contact for changes, and a pre-booked vehicle from Mumbai makes the final leg far easier with elders and luggage. Our reservations desk handles the flights, the vehicle and the changes.
