Key Takeaways
- Airline winter schedules began on October 25, 2026. On the USA–India corridor, the word "nonstop" now needs checking flight by flight: several Air India services carry a fuel and crew stop in Rome, Vienna or Kolkata on the westbound leg (Simple Flying, October 21, 2026).
- Truly nonstop in both directions this winter: United's Newark–Delhi, American's JFK–Delhi, and Air India's Delhi–San Francisco, Delhi–Vancouver and Delhi–Toronto on the 787.
- Nonstop to India, with a stop on the way back: Air India's New York JFK–Delhi, Newark–Delhi, Newark–Mumbai and JFK–Mumbai all stop at Rome on the flight from India under current schedules.
- Not flying: Air India's Delhi–Chicago has been suspended since June 1, 2026, and was not in the airline's August North America network. Dallas and Los Angeles nonstops never launched.
- The stops are the result of Indian carriers avoiding Pakistani, Iranian and Russian airspace, which stretches block times past 20 hours and forces a refuelling stop (Simple Flying, August 20, 2026).
Every October, airlines switch to their winter timetables, and every October we re-check which USA to India flights are really nonstop. This year the answer is more complicated than usual. Air India has restored the routes it suspended over the summer, but most of its flights from India to the US East Coast now make a technical stop in Europe, while its flights to India are scheduled without one. United and American are flying their single India nonstops as before. A new one-stop option to Bengaluru has opened through Zurich.
Here is the route-by-route picture as of October 25, 2026, why the stops exist, what they mean for your journey, and the checks to make before you pay.
Which USA to India flights are nonstop this winter?
The table covers every scheduled nonstop between the United States (and the two Canadian gateways many of our customers use) and India for the winter 2026–27 season. "Stop" means a technical stop: the same flight number and the same aircraft, with passengers usually staying on board while the plane refuels and changes crew.
| Route | Airline | Winter 2026–27 status | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newark – Delhi | United | Nonstop both ways, daily | United's only India nonstop. Newark–Mumbai is listed as terminated; San Francisco–Delhi was still shown as suspended in October. |
| New York JFK – Delhi | American | Nonstop both ways, daily | Boeing 777-300ER since November 2021. |
| New York JFK – Delhi | Air India | To Delhi nonstop; Delhi to JFK stops at Rome | A350-900. Was due to return to nonstop this winter; keeps the Rome stop. |
| Newark – Delhi | Air India | To Delhi nonstop; Delhi to Newark stops at Rome | A350-900. Resumed August 31 after the summer suspension. |
| Newark – Mumbai | Air India | Daily; Mumbai to Newark stops at Rome | Boeing 777-300ER. Up from three to seven weekly over the summer. |
| New York JFK – Mumbai | Air India | Resumed August 31; Mumbai to JFK stops at Rome | Boeing 777-300ER. |
| San Francisco – Delhi | Air India | Nonstop, seven weekly | Some rotations used a Kolkata fuel stop earlier in 2026; confirm your date. |
| Chicago – Delhi | Air India | Suspended since June 1, 2026 | Not in Air India's August network. Chicago has no nonstop to India this winter. |
| Toronto – Delhi | Air India | Daily nonstop on the 787-9, plus three weekly 777 flights via Vienna | Nonstop since August 1, 2026. |
| Toronto – Mumbai | Air India | New from October 25, three weekly | Mumbai to Toronto stops at Rome; Toronto to Mumbai is nonstop. 777-300ER. |
| Vancouver – Delhi | Air India | Nonstop, five weekly | The other route Air India keeps nonstop this winter. |

Delta still has no India flight; its planned Atlanta–Delhi service waits on the Airbus A350-1000, now expected around mid-2027 (see our Delta to India guide). Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston and Atlanta all connect through a hub, as they did last winter.
Why are "nonstop" flights stopping in Rome, Vienna or Kolkata?
Three closed or restricted airspaces sit between India and North America. Indian airlines cannot overfly Pakistan, the war involving Iran has closed that corridor too, and Russian airspace has been off limits to many carriers since 2022. Air India's flights to the US East Coast therefore track north over Central Asia and Europe, which adds hours. The Boeing 777 and even the A350 cannot carry the fuel and crew hours for the longest westbound legs, so the aircraft lands in Rome or Vienna to refuel and change crew. Air India described the cause in May as "continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record high jet fuel prices for international operations" (Simple Flying, May 16, 2026).
The effect on your journey:
- Time. The Delhi–JFK leg via Rome is scheduled at up to 20 hours 40 minutes, Delhi–Newark via Rome at up to 21 hours 20 minutes, and Mumbai–Toronto via Rome at more than 20 hours including the stop (Simple Flying, August 20). The eastbound flights to India, with tailwinds, are scheduled nonstop at 14 to 16 hours.
- The stop itself. You normally stay seated for about 90 minutes. There is no immigration, no bag collection, and no change of aircraft. It is not a layover, and you do not need a visa for Italy or Austria.
- Connections. Arrival times in New York and Newark are later than they were when the flights were nonstop. If you connect onward in the USA, leave at least three hours.
What changed for winter 2026–27 compared with the summer?
- The summer suspensions ended. Air India stopped Delhi–Chicago, Delhi–Newark and Mumbai–JFK from June 1, 2026. Newark and JFK–Mumbai came back on August 31; Chicago did not (Simple Flying, May 16; Simple Flying, August 20).
- Toronto–Delhi went nonstop again on August 1 on the 787-9, and Air India added a new Mumbai–Toronto service from October 25 to fill the gap left when Air Canada withdrew from Mumbai in March 2026 (Simple Flying, September 2).
- A new one-stop door to Bengaluru. SWISS began Zurich–Bengaluru on October 25, 2026, five times a week on the Airbus A350, running to March 27, 2027. It is the airline's first service to southern India, and with United's Zurich flights from Newark, Chicago, Washington and San Francisco it gives Bengaluru-bound travellers a single European connection instead of a Gulf one (Aviation A2Z, May 19, 2026). Our SWISS to India guide covers the Zurich transfer.
Does a true nonstop cost more this winter?
Usually, yes, but the gap has narrowed. In our October 2026 fare report, built from live weekly searches of 240 USA to India city pairs, the typical lowest round-trip economy fare was $1,402, and the cheapest city pair was New York to Mumbai at $788 on Emirates, a one-stop through Dubai. A Gulf or European one-stop to Delhi or Mumbai takes 18 to 21 hours door to door, which this winter is close to what the Rome-stop "nonstop" takes on the way back. If price matters more than the extra two or three hours, the one-stop wins more often than it used to.
Where the nonstop still earns its premium: families with small children who do not want a second boarding, elderly parents who find a transfer hard, and anyone with a tight onward connection in India.
How to book a nonstop to India without surprises
- Look at the routing for your exact date, not the route. On the airline's own site the flight shows as "1 stop" or carries a note such as "via FCO" when a technical stop is scheduled. Schedules for the same flight number differ by day of the week.
- Check the aircraft. On Air India, the A350 flies JFK–Delhi and Newark–Delhi; the 777 covers Mumbai and Toronto. The cabin you get depends on the exact flight, as our Air India guide explains.
- Allow for the later arrival if you are connecting onward in the USA, and for Indian domestic connections leave three hours at Delhi or Mumbai.
- Baggage is unchanged. A technical stop does not change the allowance; Air India still includes two 23 kg bags in economy on US routes (see baggage by airline).
- Book where someone watches the schedule. Airlines filed and refiled these routings three times between May and October. A ticket booked through an agency that monitors schedule changes gets re-accommodated before you find out at the airport. That is what our reservations desk does for every ticket we issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Air India flying nonstop from the USA this winter?
To India, yes: the scheduled flights from New York JFK, Newark and San Francisco to Delhi, and from Newark and JFK to Mumbai, are nonstop. From India to New York and Newark, the flights make a technical stop in Rome this winter. Delhi–San Francisco and Delhi–Vancouver remain nonstop in both directions (Simple Flying, October 21, 2026).
Why does my Delhi to New York flight stop in Rome?
Because the aircraft cannot fly the long northern routing, which avoids Pakistani, Iranian and Russian airspace, without refuelling and changing crew. The flight number and aircraft stay the same, and you normally stay on board for about 90 minutes.
Is Chicago to Delhi flying in winter 2026?
No. Air India suspended Delhi–Chicago from June 1, 2026 and had not restored it by late October. Chicago travellers connect through Newark or JFK on Air India or United, or through a Gulf or European hub.
Which US cities have nonstop flights to India in winter 2026–27?
New York JFK (Air India to Delhi and Mumbai; American to Delhi), Newark (Air India to Delhi and Mumbai; United to Delhi) and San Francisco (Air India to Delhi). Toronto and Vancouver have Air India nonstops to Delhi, and Toronto gains Mumbai.
Is a technical stop the same as a layover?
No. A layover means changing planes and, usually, going through a transit area. A technical stop is the same flight landing to refuel and change crew; you keep your seat and your bags stay loaded.
