Flights to India from Every Major US City: The Complete Gateway Guide

Key Takeaways

  • Only 2 of the 8 largest US gateway cities currently have nonstop flights to India: New York and San Francisco. The other 6 — Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, and Atlanta — require a connection.
  • Chicago is the most surprising case: both Air India's longtime Delhi-Chicago route and United's relaunched Chicago-Delhi route are currently suspended, leaving a top-5 US metro with zero nonstop India options as of this writing.
  • "Nonstop" doesn't always mean what it sounds like. Air India's San Francisco-Delhi flights currently make a fuel stop in Kolkata on some rotations — same flight number, no plane change, but a real stop on the ground.
  • Houston has never had scheduled nonstop India service from any airline — this is a longstanding gap, not a discontinued route.
  • Los Angeles and Dallas both had real, government-approved nonstop plans announced in 2024. Dallas's was canceled in 2025; Los Angeles's has been repeatedly delayed but not formally killed.

Most "flights to India from [city]" content assumes a nonstop option exists and just needs to be found. For six of the eight largest US gateway cities, that's not actually true right now. Here's the honest, current status for each — and the best connecting route where a direct flight doesn't exist.

New York (JFK / Newark): Nonstop, and the Busiest Gateway

New York has the most nonstop capacity of any US city: Air India flies A350-900 service on both JFK-Delhi and Newark-Delhi/Mumbai, United flies 787-9 on Newark-Delhi and Newark-Mumbai, and American Airlines flies JFK-Delhi nonstop as well. Flight time runs roughly 14.5 to 16 hours. See our dedicated JFK-Delhi guide for the full breakdown of aircraft, terminals, and what changed when Air India rationalized other USA-India routes in 2026, or see live New York-Delhi fares.

San Francisco: Nonstop, With a Caveat Worth Knowing

San Francisco has real nonstop service, but "nonstop" needs a footnote here. United's SFO-Delhi 787-9 route is seasonal — typically daily in winter, cut back sharply in summer months, and not currently operating as of this writing. Air India's 777-200LR SFO-Delhi service increased to 10 times weekly starting March 2026, but on some rotations the flight makes a refueling technical stop in Kolkata — same flight number and aircraft, no plane change, but a real stop on the ground that adds time. Air India ended nonstop SFO-Mumbai and SFO-Bengaluru service as of March 2026. If you're booking SFO-Delhi, ask specifically whether your flight is a true nonstop or a tech-stop rotation before assuming a 15-hour flight time. See live San Francisco-Delhi fares.

Los Angeles: A Route That Keeps Getting Delayed

Los Angeles does not currently have nonstop India service, despite real momentum toward one. Air India received Indian government approval for a Delhi-LAX 777 route back in October 2024 and has repeatedly targeted launch dates since, but as of September 2026 it isn't operating. Treat any claim that this route currently exists as outdated rather than current. The most reliable one-stop option is a Gulf hub: Qatar Airways (LAX-Doha), Emirates (LAX-Dubai), and Etihad (LAX-Abu Dhabi) all fly nonstop from LAX daily, connecting onward to Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru in another 3-4 hours. Total door-to-door time via a Gulf hub runs roughly 20-24 hours including a layover — a rough estimate, since it depends on your specific connection. Search Los Angeles-India routing options.

Dallas-Fort Worth: A Canceled Plan

Dallas is a clearer case than Los Angeles: Air India's planned Delhi-Dallas nonstop, also DGCA-approved in October 2024 and initially targeted for winter 2025, was canceled outright in September 2025 amid the airline's ongoing fleet retrofit program. No carrier currently flies DFW-India nonstop. Qatar Airways flies DFW-Doha nonstop daily on an A350, connecting to Delhi or Mumbai in roughly 3.5 to 4 more hours — the most direct one-stop option from this gateway, at a rough total of 20-22 hours door-to-door. Search Dallas-India routing options.

Chicago: Currently Zero Nonstop Options

Chicago is the most striking case in this guide. Air India's longtime daily Delhi-Chicago 777-300ER route — one of the airline's established routes for years — has been suspended since June 2026 as part of a broader capacity rationalization, and Chicago was notably left out when Air India restored most other suspended routes starting September 2026, citing limited aircraft availability. Separately, United's relaunched Chicago-Delhi nonstop (which began again in March 2025 after an earlier suspension) appears to have stopped operating in November 2025, based on current schedule data — we could not find a direct United announcement confirming this, so treat it as needing a final check against United's live route map. Net result: as of this writing, a top-5 US metro area has no nonstop flight to India from either of its historical operators. The most reliable connection is via Dubai — Emirates flies ORD-Dubai nonstop, connecting to Delhi or Mumbai in another 3-3.5 hours, for a rough total of 18-20 hours door-to-door. Search Chicago-India routing options.

Houston: A Gap That Isn't a Cutback

Houston is a different story from Chicago or Dallas: there's no record of any airline ever operating scheduled nonstop service between Houston and India. This isn't a route that was cut — it's a gap that's persisted despite Houston being a major United hub and the 4th-largest US metro area. Qatar Airways is the only carrier flying IAH-Doha nonstop, seven times weekly on an A350, connecting to Delhi, Mumbai, or Hyderabad in roughly 3.5 to 4 more hours — a rough total of 20-22 hours door-to-door. Search Houston-India routing options.

Seattle: Announced, Never Delivered

Seattle has seen more announcements than actual service. Delta floated Seattle-India nonstop plans back in 2018 that never materialized, and American Airlines announced a Seattle-Bengaluru 787-9 route (first targeted for 2020, repeatedly delayed to 2022) that we could not confirm ever actually launched. Treat both as historical plans, not current options. Emirates is the only carrier flying SEA-Dubai nonstop, seven times weekly, connecting to Delhi or Mumbai in roughly 3-3.5 more hours — a rough total of 21-23 hours door-to-door, the longest of the eight cities in this guide. Search Seattle-India routing options.

Atlanta: The One Actually Coming Back

Atlanta has real history and a credible future plan. Delta flew Atlanta-Mumbai nonstop from 2006 to 2009 before discontinuing it, citing competition from Gulf carriers, and briefly tried JFK-Mumbai in December 2019 before pulling out. Delta has since publicly stated its intent to relaunch Atlanta-Delhi nonstop — but the timeline depends on Airbus A350-1000 deliveries expected in 2026, which realistically pushes an actual route launch to 2027, not this year. Don't book around an Atlanta-Delhi nonstop existing yet. Etihad is currently the fastest one-stop option, flying ATL-Abu Dhabi nonstop daily, connecting to Delhi or Mumbai in another 3-4 hours — a rough total of 19-21 hours door-to-door. Search Atlanta-India routing options.

What This Means for Booking

If you're departing from a city without nonstop service, the connection you choose matters as much as the fare. A well-timed one-stop routing through Doha, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi can run close in total time to some of the longer nonstop options, while a poorly timed connection can add hours of layover on top of the numbers above. This is exactly the kind of routing decision worth having an agent compare for you rather than booking the first itinerary a search engine surfaces — see our complete guide to booking international flights for how direct and consolidator fares get compared, and our airline comparison for how Air India, United, and American differ on the routes that do run nonstop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which US cities have nonstop flights to India?

As of this writing, only New York and San Francisco have nonstop flights to India among the largest US gateway cities. Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, and Atlanta all currently require a one-stop connection.

Does Chicago have a nonstop flight to India?

Not currently. Both Air India's longtime Delhi-Chicago route and United's relaunched Chicago-Delhi route are not operating as of this writing — a notable gap for a top-5 US metro area. Check current status before booking, since this is a fast-changing situation.

Is the San Francisco to India flight really nonstop?

Usually, but not always. Some Air India SFO-Delhi rotations make a refueling technical stop in Kolkata under the same flight number, without a plane change. Ask specifically when booking if a true nonstop matters to you.

What's the best way to fly from Houston to India?

Houston has never had scheduled nonstop India service from any airline. Qatar Airways' Houston-Doha nonstop, connecting to Delhi, Mumbai, or Hyderabad, is currently the most direct one-stop option.

Will Atlanta ever get a nonstop flight to India?

Delta has publicly stated plans to relaunch Atlanta-Delhi nonstop service, but it depends on Airbus A350-1000 deliveries expected in 2026, which realistically points to a 2027 launch rather than this year.
